The Convergence of Art and Destiny
Driven by an unyielding passion for the arts, P.K. sought to pursue a degree at Visva-Bharati University and Khalikote College, though financial constraints made these paths difficult. By 1971, he managed to relocate to New Delhi to attend the College of Art.
In 1975, while sketching portraits at Delhi’s Connaught Place, he encountered Charlotte Von Schedvin, a student from London. The connection was instantaneous; the two fell in love and were soon married. However, their union faced an immediate challenge: Charlotte’s inevitable return to Sweden. Though she invited him to join her, P.K. resolved to make the journey on his own terms, maintaining their connection through letters as he planned his next move.
The Decision: Four Months on Two Wheels
Facing a choice between permanent separation or an impossible trek, P.K. chose the latter. Lacking the financial means for a plane ticket, he liquidated his possessions to purchase a second-hand bicycle.
On January 22, 1977, he embarked on a transcontinental journey that remains one of the most remarkable feats of endurance in modern history.
